The IONIQ 9 lease calculation.

The big advertised lease you see on a Hyundai banner almost never matches what you'll sign for.

Those headline numbers assume a lot that may not apply to you:

  • Top-tier credit
  • A specific trim and a set amount due at signing
  • A California incentive structure that may not apply

When a customer recently brought us a screenshot of a headline ad, the deal needed several thousand down and a credit tier they didn't qualify for. We restructured it to a lower drive-off that fit their budget: a different payment, but a realistic one that they could drive home with.

That's the difference between an ad and a tailored quote. This page walks you through how the IONIQ 9 lease calculation works, what we do here in National City to keep you from overpaying, and how to get a number built around you.

A number you screenshotted in June may be gone in August. We pull and verify the current program for your exact trim the day you shop, not a stale teaser rate.

Note · Charging, range, and federal clean-vehicle credit specifics change. EPA range figures should be verified at fueleconomy.gov and federal credit eligibility at irs.gov before any deal is signed. Call (619) 452-3217 for current numbers on a specific build.

02What it is

What the IONIQ 9 is, and who it's for.

The IONIQ 9 is Hyundai's full-size, three-row electric SUV, the biggest EV the brand builds, riding on the same 800-volt E-GMP platform as the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 but stretched out for genuine seven- and six-seat family duty.

Hyundai's own launch film for the IONIQ 9. It is brand footage, not our lot, but it shows the three-row cabin and the proportions better than photos do.

It slots above the IONIQ 5 in size and price, aimed squarely at the household that would otherwise be cross-shopping a Telluride, a Kia EV9, or a three-row gas SUV.

  • Buy it for the third row. This is a vehicle you buy because you need the third row to be usable by actual humans, not a parcel shelf.
  • Carry five most days? Look at the IONIQ 5. If you only occasionally carry more than five people, the smaller, cheaper IONIQ 5 may be the smarter lease, and we’ll say so.
  • Range varies by trim and wheel size. Verify the exact EPA figures for any specific configuration at fueleconomy.gov, the EPA’s official ratings database. We’d rather point you to the government figure than have you take a salesperson’s word for it.
  • Most owners just charge at home. For a National City household running kids to Chula Vista, commuting up the 805 to Kearny Mesa, and taking the occasional run out to El Cajon, the IONIQ 9’s range envelope means overnight home charging covers it, and you rarely think about it.

PlatformE-GMP

The same architecture as the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6. Stretched out for full-size three-row family duty, with the proven engineering underneath.

Trims, and the trade-off worth modeling

Trims are tiered the way Hyundai usually does it.

  • Base. Well-equipped from the start.
  • Mid-grade. Adds the comfort and tech most families want.
  • Top trim. Larger wheels, premium audio, and the driver-assist suite.

Higher trims carry a higher cap cost, which raises the lease payment, but they also often carry a higher residual percentage, which softens the blow.

That trade-off is exactly the kind of thing worth modeling on two or three trims side by side before you decide, and it’s a five-minute exercise at our desk.

03The lease math

How an IONIQ 9 lease payment is built.

A lease stops being a mystery the moment you can see the levers. Almost every IONIQ 9 lease quote is driven by a handful of numbers, and when you understand them before you sit down, you can spot whether a deal is fair.

  • Capitalized cost (the "cap cost"). This is the negotiated price of the vehicle the lease is built on, plus any add-ons, minus any down payment and incentives ("cap cost reductions"). Lower cap cost, lower payment. This is the number you negotiate, same as a purchase, which is why people who only negotiate the monthly payment often overpay.
  • Residual value. What the bank predicts the IONIQ 9 will be worth at the end of your term, expressed as a percentage of MSRP. You're paying for the difference between cap cost and residual, spread across the term. A strong residual is why a pricey EV can lease for a reasonable monthly figure.
  • Money factor. The lease equivalent of an interest rate, tied to your approved credit tier. Multiply it by 2,400 for a rough APR equivalent. On well-qualified credit and with manufacturer support, EV money factors can be very competitive.
  • Term length. Usually 24, 36, or 39 months. Shorter terms keep you in newer technology and under warranty; longer terms usually drop the monthly payment but stretch your exposure. We'll show you 36 and 39 side by side, because the residual and lease-cash sometimes make the longer term cheaper per month for almost the same total cost.
  • Due at signing. What you put down up front. More down lowers the monthly figure but raises what you'd lose if the vehicle were totaled early. There's no single "right" answer, and we'll explain that trade-off.
  • Annual mileage. Typically, 10,000, 12,000, or 15,000 miles a year. We match this to how you drive around National City and the South Bay so you're not pre-paying for miles you'll never use, and not getting surprised by overage charges at turn-in.
  • Incentives and clean-vehicle credits. Lease deals often route manufacturer incentives through the leasing bank as lease cash. Federal clean-vehicle credit eligibility, and whether it applies to a lease versus a purchase, is set at the federal level and has changed more than once, so confirm current rules at irs.gov and fueleconomy.gov. We'll show you what manufacturer lease cash is being applied to your deal, in writing, rather than promising a credit that may not survive to signing.

Here's the part our team does that a payment calculator can't.

On the most recent IONIQ 9 quote we built, our team pulled the current Hyundai Motor Finance program for the exact trim the customer wanted and verified which incentives stacked that day, then ran both a 36-month and a 39-month structure side by side.

You see real numbers, sourced from the live program, not a "starting at" teaser.

Where the EV lease incentive comes from, and the catch

Here's the honest part most ads gloss over. A big chunk of why EVs lease aggressively has, in recent years, come from how federal clean-vehicle incentives flow to leasing companies, which can then pass the benefit through as lease cash.

  • The rules have changed more than once. Who qualifies, for how much, and whether it applies to a lease at all.
  • We don't guess at your tax situation. And we don't promise a federal credit on a purchase that may not qualify.
  • Check the authoritative sources. The IRS clean-vehicle pages at irs.gov and the consumer guidance at fueleconomy.gov. For anything touching your personal taxes, your tax professional is the right call.
  • What we can do. Show you transparently what manufacturer lease cash is being applied to your specific IONIQ 9 deal, in writing, today.
Term, mileage, and money down are the three levers that move an IONIQ 9 lease payment the most.

Which lever moves your payment, and which way

Lease lever Ideal scenario for a lower payment The direction you want What sets it Where the number comes from
Capitalized cost The selling price, not the sticker, biggest single lever
Residual value The bank's predicted lease-end value of the IONIQ 9
Money factor Your approved credit tier (× 2,400 ˜ APR)
Term length 24, 36, or 39 months, we show 36 vs. 39 side by side
Due at signing Your call: protect cash flow vs. shave the monthly
Annual mileage 10,000-15,000 mi/yr; overage is a per-mile penalty
Incentives & EV credits Routed by the leasing bank; confirm at irs.gov
Residual

Residual value

What sets it
The bank's predicted lease-end value; EV residuals move
Term

Term length

Longer term ? lower monthly
What sets it
24, 36, or 39 months; we show 36 vs. 39 side by side
Mileage

Annual mileage

Right-sized ? no overage penalty
What sets it
10,000-15,000 mi/yr; overage is a per-mile penalty

Because incentives and money factors on electric vehicles change on a roughly monthly cadence, the single most useful thing you can do is request a current, personalized IONIQ 9 lease quote rather than rely on a figure you saw last month.

  • We don't publish a locked monthly figure here. A "guaranteed" payment with no information about your credit, your mileage, or the trim is a marketing number, not a quote.
  • Get a real one instead. Reach out with our team and we'll build the deal around you.
04Lease vs. finance

Lease or finance the IONIQ 9, which fits you?

Both paths are open at Dalton Hyundai, and the right answer depends entirely on how you drive and how long you keep cars.

LeaseLower monthly

Lease the IONIQ 9 if you

  • Like driving a new EV every two to three years and want to stay on the front edge of fast-moving battery and charging tech
  • Drive a fairly predictable 10,000 to 15,000 miles a year and won't blow past your allowance
  • Want a lower, more predictable monthly payment and the option to hand the keys back at lease-end
FinanceBuild equity

Finance the IONIQ 9 if you

  • Plan to keep it well past the loan and want to build equity in the vehicle
  • Drive high or unpredictable mileage that would trigger lease overage charges
  • Want to modify, road-trip hard, or otherwise not worry about wear-and-tear standards at turn-in

Here's where we'll steer some people away from leasing. If you don't drive a predictable amount of miles each year, leasing an IONIQ 9 might be the wrong call.

  • High-mileage drivers, think twice. We've sat down with rideshare drivers and big-commute customers, looked at their real annual mileage, and told them straight up that a lease's overage penalties would eat any monthly savings alive.
  • At 25,000 miles a year, financing almost always wins.
  • We'd rather lose the lease and keep the customer than put someone in a deal that punishes them at turn-in.
We'd rather you come back happy in three years than be surprised at turn-in. Tell us how you drive, and we'll run both numbers side by side before you decide.
05Cross-shopping

How the IONIQ 9 stacks up against the obvious cross-shops.

If you're shopping a three-row IONIQ 9 lease, you're almost certainly looking at a couple of other vehicles too. Here's how we frame it for our customers.

Kia EV9Closest sibling

Kia EV9

The closest mechanical sibling, sharing much of the same underlying engineering. The choice usually comes down to styling, the specific lease program running that month, and which dealer earns your trust. We'll put the two lease quotes next to each other and let the numbers decide.

IONIQ 5Smaller & cheaper

Hyundai IONIQ 5

Hyundai's own smaller EV. If you don't need three rows, the IONIQ 5 is lighter, cheaper, and often leases for noticeably less. Plenty of families walk in for an IONIQ 9 and leave in an IONIQ 5 once they realize they use the third row twice a year. We're fine with that.

Gas SUVTelluride / Palisade

A three-row gas SUV

The right call if your driveway can't support home charging or your usage is all-highway road-trip miles. EVs reward home charging. If you can't plug in overnight, we'll tell you the IONIQ 9 may not be your best fit, that's a real conversation we have weekly.

Cross-checkThird parties

Don't take our word

Crash-test results live at iihs.org and nhtsa.gov, and pricing and valuation context is at edmunds.com and KBB. We'd rather you cross-check us than feel sold to.

The IONIQ 9 and the EV9 are basically siblings. If you're interested in both, we'll put the two lease quotes next to each other and let the numbers and the showroom experience decide.
06Charging

Charging an IONIQ 9 in National City and the South Bay.

A lease conversation that ignores charging is incomplete, so we cover it before you sign.

Most IONIQ 9 owners do the bulk of their charging at home overnight, which is where a Level 2 setup pays for itself.

Home charging is the easy path

The vast majority of IONIQ 9 owners we set up do roughly 80-90% of their charging at home on a Level 2 (240-volt) charger, waking up every morning to a "full tank."

If you own your home or have a dedicated garage outlet in National City, Chula Vista, or Imperial Beach, that's the cheapest and most convenient path, and your electric utility may have EV rate plans worth asking about.

Road trips and public charging

For road trips up the I-5 or out toward the desert, the IONIQ 9's 800-volt system is built to add range quickly at a high-speed DC fast charger. Public charging availability around San Diego County keeps improving, but it's still the thing to be honest with yourself about before you go electric.

If you can't charge at home

If you live in an apartment without reliable charging access, we'll say plainly that an EV lease might frustrate you, and we'd rather lose the sale than set you up for a bad three years.

You don't strictly need home charging, but it's by far the easiest path, and we'll tell you whether the IONIQ 9 is the right move for how you live.

Most owners we set up do roughly 80-90% of their charging at home. If you can't reliably charge where you live, we'd rather lose the sale than set you up for a bad three years.
07Owning & servicing it

Owning and servicing your IONIQ 9 here.

The lease doesn't end when you drive off the lot. That's where ownership starts, and it's a big reason to lease where you will be serviced.

Where the servicing happens: Dalton Hyundai National City, 3150 National City Blvd, where your IONIQ 9 is delivered and serviced.

Our service department at 3150 National City Blvd handles Hyundai EV maintenance with factory-trained technicians. EV maintenance is lighter than gas: no oil changes, fewer wear items, regenerative braking that's easy on the pads. A few things that are built into how we service:

  • Complimentary In-Drive Alignment Check and Tire Check at every visit. EVs are heavy and instant-torque, which means tires and alignment matter more than on a gas car and uneven wear shows up faster. On a recent IONIQ 5 lease return, our team inspected the tires and caught uneven inner-edge wear from a slightly out-of-spec alignment. That's the kind of anomaly this check catches so it doesn't cost you at turn-in.
  • The Dalton VIP Advantage Program, which rewards you for keeping the IONIQ 9 in top shape across the lease term, and a well-maintained vehicle is exactly what protects you from wear-and-tear charges at turn-in.

Our service team runs Monday-Friday 7:00 AM - 6:00 PM and Saturday 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM (closed Sunday). You can reach service directly at (619) 314-5768, and parts at (619) 604-0487.
