Take a common example: a $229/mo online special that assumes $3,500 down and a 10,000-mile cap that would not fit a 40-mile daily round trip. Pull the full quote and those hidden assumptions show up fast.

The usual fix once those assumptions surface: move to a 12,000-mile term at a slightly higher payment. Across 36 months the total often comes out lower, because the projected overage charges disappear from the math.

Compare the total cost, not just the monthly payment

Take the Tucson Hybrid SE from the table above: $299 a month for 36 months is $10,764, plus $3,999 due at signing — about $14,763 before tax over the lease. A lower advertised payment with more money down can land at the same total or higher. The monthly number never tells you that; the total does.

• Add the money due at signing back in. A $229 payment resting on $3,500 down isn't cheaper than a slightly higher payment with little down. It just moves the cost.
• Size the mileage cap to the actual drive. A 10,000-mile cap looks fine on paper, until you map it against a daily Chula Vista round trip on the I-5. Then the overage charges at turn-in swallow the savings.
